The Farrington brothers shouldn’t have taken on the Pinkertons.
After the Civil War, former Confederate guerrillas Levi and Hillary Farrington took to robbing trains. They had the misfortune to run into William Pinkerton (picture). In 1871, he and agents managed to arrest Levi and take him to Union City, Missouri. There, vigilantes shot and killed the outlaw. Weeks later Pinkerton was taking Hillary on a steamboat to face charges in Tennessee. The two got into a fight. Hillary lost his balance and fell into the paddlewheel, where he was crushed to death.
