Tom Powers ran into Billy the Kid sometime in 1877—or so Powers’ daughter said eight decades later. Tom was cowboying for John Chisum when a young man came into camp and asked for the boss. Before Powers could answer, the Kid pulled a gun and threatened to shoot him. The situation was tense for a few seconds until other cowboys rode in and the Kid holstered his gun.
In later years, Tom Powers became the best friend of Pat Garrett—the man who killed that same Billy the Kid.
