A Song for the Good Times

Photo of Myles Keogh

Myles Keogh was a soldier of fortune, an Irishman who fought for the papal army in Italy and later the Union in the Civil War.

He’s best known for leading Company I of the 7th Cavalry under Lt. Col. George Armstrong Custer—and for dying in heroic fashion at the Little Bighorn. Keogh may have made another contribution to the 7th. Legend has it that he brought a popular Irish drinking song with him to America, one that Custer adopted as his unit’s theme—Garryowen.
