Bat Masterson and the college coach.
Bat Masterson had an interesting but indirect connection to college sports. His wife—legal or casual—was Emma Moulton. Her first husband (legal) was Ed Moulton, a well-known runner and athletic trainer in the late 1800s and early 1900s. In 1891, Ed became head coach and trainer for the University of Minnesota football team. That year, the Golden Gophers were 3-1-1, with victories over Wisconsin and Iowa. Later, he became track coach at Stanford, where he trained several Olympic medalists.
