Ringing The Bell

In the 1970s, the Lane Family of Chicago bought the Bell Ranch in northeast New Mexico. The land has supported cattle operations since the 1820s. Dotted with Apache and Comanche petroglyphs, some buildings date back to the 1800s. The 1930’s Hacienda has hosted glitterati including Howard Hughes, Clark Gable, Shirley Temple and Roy Rogers, and it is listed on the National Register.

Now, some 250,000 acres of the land is for sale at a price tag of $100 million. The buyer gets the cattle and horses, the four ranch camps spread across the property and a museum, which features artifacts and photos from a storied history.

John Watson, who is handling the sale, says they want a special kind of buyer. “The Lane family is looking to identify the next steward of the property,” he notes. They want it to stay intact as a working cattle operation. No “McMansions.” No big developments. No breaking it up and selling the pieces. They want to sell it to someone who appreciates the heritage of the Bell Ranch—and will preserve it for future generations to enjoy.
