Charlie Bassett was a major player in early Dodge City. In late 1872, he was an original owner of the legendary Long Branch Saloon. Six months later, Bassett became the first elected sheriff of Ford County, KS. He was term limited to two stints in office, but at the end of the second term, he also served as Dodge City assistant marshal. When Marshal Ed Masterson was killed in April 1878, Bassett was named to the position. He resigned 18 months later, although he made an appearance with the so-called Dodge City Peace Commission in 1883.
