Frank Hamer’s Recuperation in Pecos

Future Texas Ranger Frank Hamer was severely wounded by Dan McSween in 1900, after Hamer refused to carry out a hit for the rancher.

Hamer needed time to recuperate and his parents wanted him and brother Harrison away from McSween.  So they sent them to work for friend Berry Ketchum (photo) on his spread near Pecos.

There were stories that Ketchum was not always on the up and up—partly because of the outlaw activities of his younger brothers Sam and Tom “Black Jack” Ketchum. Frank never had a bad word to say about Berry.
