Fred Waite is notorious to history as a member of the Regulators, the group featuring Billy the Kid involved in the Lincoln County (NM) War.  Waite participated in several of the major actions in that dispute.

But afterward he moved back to his home in the Chickasaw Nation in Oklahoma.  There he became a newspaperman, rancher, lawman and tribal leader. He was elected speaker of the house three times.  By the time Waite died in 1895, he was one of the most respected men in the Chickasaw Nation.
