Enough that when Indians wanted to find them for a hunt, they’d get up very early in the morning and look over the horizon for a little cloud. There were so many buffalo that their breath created a vapor cloud.
One oldtimer recalled the day he watched a vast herd with a pair of field glasses. He estimated it was 8 to 10 miles wide, even at a gallop, it would take an hour to pass.
