Kit Carson Couldn’t Live up to the Legend

kit-carson-blog1November 17, 1849. Kit Carson led an army detachment to a Jicarilla Apache camp, trying to rescue captive Ann White.

Most of the Indians got away—but before they did, they put an arrow in the heart of Mrs. White. Carson was angry and crestfallen.  It was made worse when he discovered that the dead woman had been reading a pulp novel about Carson’s alleged exploits. The frontiersman believed Mrs. White had been praying for him to rescue her, and he had let her down.

Carson came to hate his own legendary reputation.
