Virgil Earp.

Virgil Earp’s entry into law enforcement was unexpected.  It was in Prescott, Arizona Territory on October 16, 1877; he was talking with two local lawdogs when they went to arrest two men for firing their guns in town.  Earp was quickly deputized and joined the chase. It ended up in a gunfight—and the two suspects were fatally wounded. Virgil was given much of the credit for bringing the two miscreants down.

A year later, Earp was elected a Prescott town constable. A year after that, November 1879, Earp went to Tombstone.
