Ages 6 and older: During a time of drought, Ji-Stu, the ingenious Cherokee trickster Rabbit, decides to dig a well. Wanting no part of hard work, he steals water from an underground stream the animals found. To catch him, the animals devise a pine tar wolf. In this Cherokee variation of the Tar Baby story, the trickster gets his just desserts. The book’s rich illustrations include an earthy otter, a raccoon, deer and turtle, as well as wild night skies.
