Coming in November from the University of Wisconsin Press is the first biography of director John Sturges, who was responsible for Gunfight at the O.K. Corral, The Magnificent Seven, Hour of the Gun and many other remarkable films. Author Glenn Lovell states in the introduction of Escape Artist: The Life and Films of John Sturges, that he thinks Sturges has been somewhat overlooked as an artist, and that he belongs in the same discussions as Anthony Mann and Budd Boetticher. Sturges certainly made films that were powerful and ground-breaking, and he was a brilliant ensemble director. Some of his pictures are every bit as good today as they were when they were made.
