The Death of Frank Loving

Taking on John Allen was a bad idea.

Frank Loving was a well-known Western gambler. In 1882, he was plying his trade in Trinidad, CO (photo). There, he engaged in a longstanding dispute with Frank Allen. On April 16, the two went for their guns in the Imperial Saloon. It took awhile to reach a conclusion. Each shot and missed several times before Allen ran out and sought cover in a hardware store. Loving followed him, only for Allen to end things by shooting his quarry in the back. Loving died five days later. Allen was acquitted on a self-defense plea.
