The Journalist and the Gunfighter

King Fisher

When King Fisher met Horace Greeley.

The story goes like this—famed New York journalist Horace Greeley was in Texas in the early 1870s. He was addressing a meeting of the Agricultural Society. Greeley asked to be introduced to a real-life desperado. His hosts came up with King Fisher, who was in his teens but already had a reputation as a dangerous man. Fisher thought it was funny and acted the role. Greeley finally asked him how many men had Fisher killed. His response is not recorded.
