As unappetizing as it sounds, this was the “go to” recipe in the Old West when all other ingredients were scarce. One recipe calls for 2 tablespoons butter; ½ cup sugar; 3 tablespoons flour; 2 teaspoons cinnamon; ½ teaspoon ground cloves; ½ teaspoon ground allspice; 1 egg, lightly beaten; 2 tablespoons cider vinegar; 1 cup water; 1 pie crust. It was mixed and boiled until thick, the poured into a pie crust and baked 30 minutes at 350 degrees.
