Lin Garrett is 70 years old, down on his luck and living on a “poor farm” in Flagstaff, Arizona.

Suffering from arthritis and kidney failure, he does little more than reminisce about the old days when he was sheriff. When a train is robbed by the same outlaw Lin had sent to prison 30 years ago, Lin “borrows”?an aged gelding from the farm and takes up the trail one more time. During the chase, Lin is reunited with a widow he’d been in love with when both were young. Readers usually find it difficult to become intrigued by cranky old men and gun-slinging grannies, but somehow Boggs pulls it off, writing an unusual tale with a satisfying, albeit bittersweet, ending.
