When did gambling become illegal out West?
Sherry Monahan
Willow Springs, North Carolina
Gambling was outlawed in Arizona in 1907. Over the next few years, it was made illegal in all the states, as part of a national trend aimed at banning vices, including drinking.
Gambling was legal in Nevada from 1864 to 1910. It became legal again in 1931, just in time to attract the Hoover Dam construction workers to Las Vegas.
In legendary towns like Cripple Creek, Colorado, and Deadwood, South Dakota, legalized gambling has been brought back to attract tourists.
