The town and the mine have a rich history.

The area surrounding Rock Springs is chalk full of rich Arizona history. During the 1860s, it was mentioned often in the journals of cavalry troops passing through the popular watering spot.

During the mid-1870s, huge silver deposits were found west of the Agua Fria River. The Tip Top mine opened in 1876. Soon after the Tip Top opened, some 200 miners had settled in the camp. It would be five years before a post office was established so the residents had to pay $30 a month to have a mail carrier deliver their mail from Gillett, eight miles away.
