Matt Warner rode with Butch Cassidy and was one of the outlaw’s closest friend. Warner—real name, Willard Christianson—pulled off a number of jobs before being caught and convicted for a couple of killings in 1896. When he got out in 1900, Warner went straight and actually worked in law enforcement.
But he had a sad end. His first wife had accused him of beating her, and the charge made its way into a ghost-written memoir Last of the Bandit Riders. Warner was upset, went on a drunken bender and died as a result.
