True Grit, the 1968 Charles Portis novel about a dissolute deputy U.S. marshal and a precocious teenage girl, was made into movies on two occasions. The first came out in 1969 and starred John Wayne, who won an Oscar for portraying Rooster Cogburn. The 2010 version had Jeff Bridges in the role; he was nominated for an Academy Award but didn’t win.
