Why did Army paratroopers during World War II shout “Geronimo” when they jumped? Joe Riley St. Paul, Minnesota It’s said to have started at Fort Benning, Georgia during the war. The troopers had just seen a Western movie about Geronimo. During maneuvers, they began calling each other by that name and it carried over to the jump.
