Monument Hill near La Grange, Texas is an interesting story. The remains of Texians killed by Mexicans in the Black Bean Episode and the Dawson Massacre were entombed in 1848. The site was bought by a German immigrant the next year; he built a brewery nearby. When he died in the 1880s, the site began deteriorating. In 1905, the Texas legislature authorized purchase of the location. For the Texas Centennial in 1936, the state erected a shellstone monument. It is now part of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.
