On August 24, 1881, Burt Wilkinson—a member of the Ike Stockton Gang—shot and killed Marshal Clate Ogsbury in the mining town of Silverton, Colorado. The locals were furious; a reward of $2500 was put up for Wilkinson’s arrest.
His boss Ike Stockton claimed the cash by turning Wilkinson in. There was no trial. A mob took the killer from the local jail and lynched him on September 4, 1881.
