The editor of The Epitaph made a surprising switch.

William H. Kelly was editor/publisher of The Tombstone Epitaph from 1928 through 1930. During that time—he was only 26 when he acquired The Epitaph–Kelly was the major force behind the first Helldorado Days and other efforts to promote Tombstone. But when he sold the paper, Kelly left journalism. He got a doctorate in anthropology and was a professor for many years at the University of Arizona. Kelly died of cancer in Tucson in 1980.
