Jack McCall’s execution for killing Wild Bill.
March 1, 1877. Jack McCall pays the ultimate price for killing Wild Bill Hickok in Deadwood, Dakota Territory the previous August. McCall was originally tried by a miner’s court in Deadwood; it found him not guilty. But that panel was illegal since it was in an unincorporated area. McCall went to Yankton and bragged about the murder. He was arrested, tried and convicted. After he was hanged. McCall’s body was buried in a local cemetery. The cemetery was moved a few years later. When McCall was exhumed, it’s reported that he still had the noose around his neck.
