Jose Chavez y Chavez rode with Billy the Kid and the Regulators during the Lincoln County War. Afterwards, he was involved in various criminal enterprises. He was more or less a hired killer for Hispanic leader Vincente Silva—until Chavez killed Silva in 1893. Eventually, Chavez was caught and sent to prison for another murder. But he was pardoned in 1909 after helping prison officials during a riot. Chavez lived a quiet life before dying at his New Mexico home in 1924.
