Four years ago, in 2017, Dona Ana County (NM) researchers found a remarkable document in a box of old records. It was a coroner’s jury report from Feb. 28, 1908—and it dealt with the killing of legend Pat Garrett.
The jury visited the death site later in the day of Garrett’s killing. Based on that and the testimony of Wayne Brazel, the panel found that Brazel had shot the ex-lawman. Brazel was later acquitted on self-defense claims. The contents of the paper had been known since then, but the original document was misplaced for nearly 110 years.
