July 20, 1889. A group of ranchers lynches Ella Watson and Jim Averell in Wyoming. The cattlemen claim the couple are guilty of rustling. The reality: water and land rights are behind the killings. Afterward, the ranchers smear the couple, accusing them of running a bawdy house and nicknaming Watson “Cattle Kate.”
