Pat Garrett left quite a legacy as a lawman in New Mexico and the killer of Billy the Kid.  But he wasn’t the only member of the family to leave an impact on the state. His daughter Elizabeth, born blind in 1885, became quite a musician and songwriter—with the encouragement of her parents.

In 1915, she wrote O Fair New Mexico.  Two years later, the New Mexico legislature adopted it as the official state song.
