The Earps’ father had a reputation for bad behavior.
In May 1864, Nicholas Earp—the father of Virgil, Wyatt, Morgan, etc.—led a wagon train from Iowa to California. Most of the travelers were Earp kin, and maybe they were used to Nick’s authoritarian ways. The others were not. Sarah Jane Rousseau kept a diary of the proceedings, which included this description of the wagon master: “He is such an uncouth and foul-mouthed person I think we made a terrible mistake engaging him and furnishing him horses and provisions to lead this wagon train west.” Nicholas did manage to get everyone to California.
