Tom Mix’s horse became a famous screen presence.
Tom Mix’s horse, Tony, was the only horse who starred in his own movie, made in 1922. Mix had a mere supporting role in “Just Tony.” The great steed leaped steep canyons, chased trains for miles and miles, swam raging rivers, and galloped through fire. In one scene, he walked over to a table, picked up Mix’s six-shooter and brought it to him. Tony, like his rider, had lots of on-screen flirtations with comely colts. The only thing Tony feared was a dummy horse, used as a studio prop.
