John Younger

Dallas County (TX) Deputy Sheriff Charles Nichols was the first Dallas area lawman to die in the line of duty.  And his killer was famed then and now.

John Younger (photo)—of the Younger family—was hiding out in Dallas when he and a friend harassed a disabled man in January 1871.  Nichols and another lawman tried to arrest the pair. The outlaws decided to make a run for it, but they found their horses were being guarded.  So they suddenly opened up on Nichols and company, killing both.  The shooters were indicted but never tried.
