ride the high country true west
A still from Ride the High Country.

Ride the High Country is considered a classic.  The 1962 film—directed by Sam Peckinpah—starred Joel McRea as a washed up marshall hired to protect a gold shipment, and Randolph Scott as the lawman’s old pal, who has gone down the outlaw trail.

The project had a lot of promise, but MGM thought it had a dog on its hands.  It was released as the opener on double bills with “B” flicks—none of them Westerns.  But audience reaction for the movie was so positive that the studio re-released it as a feature.
