One of the big questions about Wyoming’s Johnson County War: who assassinated Orly “Ranger” Jones and John A. Tisdale? Both were small ranchers, targeted by the stock growers association. Both were gunned down from ambush in December 1891.
Some accounts say range detective Tom Horn (below) pulled the trigger on them. Others believe that former Johnson County Sheriff Frank Canton (above) was the killer. Someone near one of the shooting scenes described a tall, rangy man in dark clothing—which could have been either Horn or Canton. Both were capable of the deeds. Nobody was arrested in the killings.
