How did the Kid arm himself for his big escape?

Some accounts claim that when Billy the Kid escaped from the Lincoln County Jail in 1881, he used a pistol a friend had stashed in the outhouse. Others say he took Deputy James Bell’s pistol. The truth is, no one is sure where Billy got that gun. But the outhouse version makes a better story than the other—which is why the Westerns have tended to go with that one.
