Texas Rangers go after rustlers in Mexico.

November 20, 1875. Captain Leander McNelly leads a force of Texas Rangers into Mexico to retrieve more than 200 stolen cattle. Backed by US troops (who stayed on the Texas side of the Rio Grande), the Rangers get into a firefight in which about 80 Mexicans were killed.

Ordered to retreat, McNelly and company cross the river–but a smaller force invades Mexico the next day and take a Mexican captain hostage, threatening to kill him. Mexican authorities give in and return more than 400 cattle rustled from Texas ranchers. The so-called Las Cuevas War is over.
