Frank Canton hid his earlier, sordid life.

Frank Canton held a number of honorable positions in his life—lawman, detective, adjutant of the Oklahoma National Guard. But his earlier life was not exactly something to write home about. In the 1870s—under his real name, Josiah Horner—he rode the outlaw trail in Texas. He killed a Buffalo Soldier in 1874 but managed to escape. He was arrested for bank robbery in 1877—and again got away. He moved to Wyoming where he took on the alias by which he is known to history.
