How Pat Garrett met his end.
Feb. 29, 1908. Pat Garrett is gunned down on the road outside Las Cruces, NM. Wayne Brazel admits to the shooting but claims it is self-defense–in spite of the fact that Garrett was shot in the back of the head while urinating.
Brazel is acquitted. It’s believed that the killing was a conspiracy among a number of well-known folks in New Mexico and Texas. Some believe that assassin Jim Miller pulled the trigger, although that was never proven.
Garrett, of course, is best known for killing Billy the Kid more than a quarter century earlier.
