Lew Wallace came to Santa Fe in 1878 to serve as New Mexico territorial governor. He moved into the Palace of Governors, which was in pretty bad shape. One of the things he discovered: official documents, some of them dating back to the Spanish era of the 1600s. Some of them were being used as insulation in the walls. Others were strategically placed in the outhouse.
Wallace and his wife saved and restored as many of the papers as they could. That collection was the basis of the New Mexico archives.
