J.J. Webb was marshal of Las Vegas, New Mexico in 1880. He was also a member of the Dodge City Gang which basically ran the town—often in not-so-legal ways. On March 2, Webb attempted to arrest Michael Kelliher, partly to relieve him of $1900. Kelliher pulled a gun; Webb killed him with one shot.
Webb was convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison. But he managed to break jail in November 1881. He died of smallpox the next year in Winslow, Arizona.
