Ike Clanton

A Cowboy’s view of what started the OK Corral fight.

So why did the OK Corral gunfight take place? According to Cowboy Ike Clanton, it started with a stagecoach robbery. The March 1881 stickup of the Benson coach left two men dead. Clanton claimed that the Earps and Doc Holliday all told him—in confidence—that they’d been involved. Holliday took credit for the killings. Ike said the Earps became afraid that their secret would be revealed, so they decided that they would kill Clanton. Of course, the Earps and Holliday had multiple opportunities to eliminate Ike but never did it.
