Placerville, CA.

Doctor Edward Waters arrived in the California Mother Lode town of Placerville and hung out his shingle. His first visitor was self-styled “Doctor” Hulling, also the town drunk. Clad in black suit and Mexican sash, he demanded to see the new doctor’s certificate. When handed to him, he grabbed it, tore it in half and spit tobacco juice in the real doctor’s face. The real doctor led him out into the street, and shot him dead, thus performing his first official act, that of signing his former rival’s death certificate.
