Except for illness, Tombstone mayor and Epitaph founder John Clum might have walked a very different road. After finishing prep school, he decided to go to college. His parents wanted him to become a pastor, so they encouraged him to go to the Dutch Reformed Church-associated Rutgers University. But strenuous athletic activities caused Clum to get a case of rheumatism. That prevented him from working to earn money for school. So Clum looked to the West for new opportunities.
