Bill Earhart was a shootist who helped out “Killin’” Jim Miller on occasion—either as a lookout or assassin for hire. Miller wanted him and a cohort to kill an opponent on March 3, 1896—but Barney Riggs (photo) wasn’t the target to take on. Riggs was a noted gunman himself. Earhart and his pal walked into a saloon in Pecos, Texas where Riggs was filling in as a bartender. Earhart got off the first shot before Riggs killed him. The other gunman fled—but Riggs charged after him and put a bullet in his head.
