Billy the Kid was in no hurry to leave after breaking jail.

Billy the Kid became famous after he escaped from the Lincoln County Jail on April 28, 1881. In doing so, he killed two of his jailers. Billy took his time in getting out of Lincoln. He removed his chains and handcuffs. He got a horse, then saddled it for the ride to freedom. But before he left town, the Kid went to several bystanders, shook hands and had brief conversations. All in all, the outlaw didn’t actually depart Lincoln until about an hour after the deaths of the lawmen. Nobody tried to stop him.
