What cards did Wild Bill hold when he was shot?

On August 2nd, 1876, Jack McCall walked into the Nuttal and Mann’s No. 10 Saloon in Deadwood, Dakota Territory, and shot Wild Bill Hickok in the back of the head. Hickok died instantly; his head fell on the table. Cards were scattered and covered with blood. Nobody was wondering about what cards Wild Bill was holding and no one cared. It wasn’t until 50 years later that Frank Wilstach wrote Wild Bill Hickok: Prince of the Pistoleers—and claimed that Hickok held aces and eights, the Dead Man’s Hand.
