The Abilene hardcase was less than the legends.

June 14, 1871. Abilene, Kansas Marshal Wild Bill Hickok hires Tom Carson as a deputy. There are a lot of myths about Carson. That he was Kit Carson’s nephew. That he racked up several notches on his gun over the years. That he was killed several years later, in the line of duty. He may have confronted John Wesley Hardin for illegally carrying a pistol in town–but even that is in question.

The truth–he was a bit of a hard case who drank too much and managed to get a star pinned on his chest.
