Cowboys who killed a New Mexico lawman paid a price.
On January 22, 1880, drunk cowboys were causing trouble in a Las Vegas, New Mexico saloon. Marshal Joe Carson and Deputy “Mysterious” Dave Mather (photo) intervened. The rowdies killed Carson, but Mather returned fire, leaving one cowboy dead and two hurt. Two of the men managed to escape; they were captured two weeks later. A mob lynched them in Las Vegas—while Joe Carson’s widow shot bullets into their bodies.
