Equines suffered the consequences in battle.

Sadly, horses suffered huge casualties during the 19th Century, whether it was the Civil War, the Indian Wars or the wars in Europe and Asia. Horses, because of their size, presented a large target. Also, an unhorsed cavalryman was akin to a “duck out of water.” The reason that so many horses were wounded or killed during the early part of the 20th century was military leaders were still fighting 19th century wars, but the advent of barbed wire and machine guns rendered the use of horse cavalry obsolete.
